Hi Folks,
Has anyone tried to grow elephant garlic or indeed any garlic from seed?
When is the best time to sow?
Do you get a single clove formed in the first year that needs to be replanted the following year to get the full head?

I very much doubt they would come true from seed especially own saved!

If you are only wanting to try it as an experiment, go ahead, but if you actually want to have cloves to use you may very well wasting your time!

I haven't used seeds, but have used those very small off-shoot cloves that form around the main event... these grow to a single solid bulb called a roundel, about 3 cm in diameter, then the following season they split to make normal large cloves

I reckon seed plants might do the same thing, maybe taking an extra year? I can't see why, if you protect the flowers from random onion pollination, they would 't grow. Tricky but not impossible

How did you get the offshoot bulb to grow? I have tried several times but have never been successful.
Although from one purchase of 10 cloves about 6 years ago I have managed to grow 12-15 bulbs each subsequent year
