Post by: jezza18 on September 12, 2018, 13:45
hi i have grown melons for quite a while in the greenhouse but usually only get one per plant. either the flowers do not set or the melons start small and wither away. Any ideas for next year

Hard to know whether your GH or PT has been visited by pollinating insects, so best to make sure and hand pollinate - I use a small, cheap artist's paintbrush to transfer pollen from male to female flowers.

I grew Sweetheart melons a few years ago which were reasonably successful, although I seem to remember the male flowers didn't produce much pollen so it was a bit fiddly, not to mention a bit hit and miss too.

I only get one per plant and there are tons of polinators in my PT. I think a lot of it is down to the variety you're growing.
