I found a fat, pure white caterpiller eating a ripe tomato today, there was no damage to the foliage, just a neat round hole ond the tom, anybody know what this may be?

It will be a tomato moth caterpillar.  They only target the fruit and are a real pain.  Check your plants carefully - they hide in the foliage and on the stems during the day.

The caterpillars come in a range of colours and attack peppers as well.

If you disturb them they can fall to the ground.

Tom moth caterpillars come in brown and green too.

Shake the plants then pick them up works well .

That would explain why my peppers are doing so badly this year, thanks for the info.
