Why You Have An Allotment?
« on: February 03, 2008, 19:25 »
It was following our family's first visit to the Eden Project last summer that we were inspired by what we saw and decided to take the plunge and apply for an allotment. Ok so we may still be waiting to be allocated a plot but we still have the bug big time.

This made me wonder what it was that inspired you guys to have an allotment?

I don't have a lottie, just a back garden, but it's where my dad used to grow his veg, so I'm expected to keep the growing going, and found I enjoyed it 10x more than I thought I would.

I got an allotment probably because my grandparents grew their own veg and my mum and dad grew their own veg. The thing that I liked about having an allotment was that no-one would be telling me what to do, it was all my decision, that gave me an amazing sense of freedom from the everyday hassles and strife. :D

Hi and welcome Glen, from one newbie to another :)
About 3yrs back after doing up the cabbage patch of a garden, our home garden, first couple of seasons yeah! still plenty to do. One evening down me local watering hole, over heard a conversation, allotments, ask the guy, where ? how much? ect. Took it over end of last  July, lotta hard work ect ect , now I,m happy as a pig in the proverbial, come and go as and when, still maintain the home patch, love it. What else do I SAY?

Bye  PAH

Because I have a very small garden, and my (total of 0.50 acre) plots only cost about £20 p.a. To move up to a house with a garden that size where I live would cost me £250-500,000.

I've always grown some kind of veg eversince I helped my grandad with his garden. I, like you, am waiting for an allotment cos the garden is just toooooooooo small. Well compared to some gardens today its actually quite big, but just not big enuff for me and my veg, and the kids, and the dogs, and the rabbits.........

BTW welcome Glen

Welcome Glen,
I rent my plot of land just down the road from me because I was growing veg in my garden and flowers in tubs and then decided I wanted to grow more and include potatoes. This will be my third year now and I am just coming to the end of last year's potatoes. I can also have a bigger greenhouse on my plot not to mention my chickens and this year I am planning a shed. I find it very peaceful down there with no-one about.  :D

It was my dad too.  He grew all our veg and loved to go out poaching for all sorts of game.  We didn't have much money but we ate like royalty.

I used to go out and pick veg for sunday dinner, pick off the caterpillars and help prepare them while listening to The Clitheroe Kid or The Navy Lark etc.  Magic.

Thanks dad, I miss you

First post!  :o TBH it's financial reasons for us. We're a family of 6 and have serious cash flow problems. So, with a DH and 3 teenage boys in the mix, decided to go for it! My paternal grandparents owned a farm, and every member of my mums family have grown their own fruit and veg, so here's hoping it's in the blood/

Of course also eating what we've grown together, with all the fresh air will be nice too :)
