Onions and Garlic all gone...
« on: January 12, 2009, 10:09 »
Well finally we have eaten the last onion from last year and we had a few hundred and had to buy some at the weekend - totally gutted

Also down to the last garlic bulb, still have about 6 left but they have withered up and gone to garlic heaven.

I was going to say lesson learned - was to plant more this year but had to throw a fair few onions away due to rotting while in storage... shame they don't keep until June, then I would grow more.

Or is there a way to make them last longer? I have mine hung in a dry (but cold) garage.

cheers
SG

What varieties where they some keep longer than others, Sturon is supposed to be a good keeper. According to Mr Titchmarsh they should be stored in a cool but light place.

Stuttgater, Red Bermen (sp?) and Allium Centurian.

Was rather cuffed they lasted this long to be honest :)

nice choice, it's great when they last. I've just "discovered" 4 ice cream tubs full of runner beans in the freezer  :D

That's what the previous owner of my house used to do and the strings and bits of onions stalk are still there to prove it!
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

Garage is fairly bright and that is the only space for them.. cannot complain really, had a good crop.

@woodburner... loads of them in my garage still, I must take them down :)

Oh one I did learn this year with them... is wash the damn garlic and onions before storing them :D

I'm curious too. We don't wash ours but we do make sure all soil is off them and the rootlets cut off. My problem is that I grew way too much garlic this past year.

I have still got about 20 onions left in my shed, i think that you must get them well dry befor you hang them and make sure that the frost does not get to them if you drop one or bruise it dont hang it eat it .

Well perhaps not wash them but clean them a bit.. and cut off the roots. I dried mine after digging straight from the ground and hung up... when I take some down to use, MUD all over the kitchen :) didn't even remove the mud from the roots of the garlic and onions... I am that lazy.

Ahh I don't wash mine lift let them lay on the ground take them home let them do the same till the mud dries, then brush it off and plait.
There's still some mud on them, but I tell my OH it adds to the authenticity of home grown produce  :thumright:
