Pruning wisteria
« on: July 29, 2011, 20:49 »
GW has just shown a really easy way to do this, so thought I'd note it down here for future reference by everyone.

Stage 1 - in the summer, perhaps 2 or 3 times overall.  There are a lot of long whippy growths.  Look along them to see where the green stems come off old brown wood.  Then count 6 buds back along the green stem from the join with the old wood, and prune immediately after the 6th bud going towards the tip.

This will not regrow, but over the season some previously shorter growths may get longer so as to need this pruning.

Stage 2 - in the early spring (I think it was), prune all those green stems back from 6 buds to 2 buds.

And that's it.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Thanks for writing that down, i always watch these programs then forget what was said after 5 mins ! Its an age thing.  Our wisteria is 22 years old and has only flowered once. Next year is the year for flowers then  ;)
