Cuttings
« on: October 10, 2009, 20:21 »
Another query :)

I've got a thornless blackberry (don't know what make ) as I inherited it from the past owner.  Anyway, I had my first fruiting this year off it, and I let some friends help themselves, and they've asked me if they can have a cutting.  My question is for a starter for 10, is how do I take cuttings?  I've just bought a tub of rooting gel.  Any advice will be appreciated :D

I Think the easiest way to do it is to get a growing tip that can reach the soil, scratch away some of the outside of the stem, apply your rooting compound (they root very easily themselves, but as you've got it you might as well use it :) ) and fix the wound down slightly into the soil. Either weigh it down with a stone, or a bent piece of wire.
It should grow away in the spring and can then be detached from the parent plant...simples :D

Ditto..... could be loch ness, thats a thornless one. You can grow them as canes by doing exactly as mos suggests. Might be worth holding off till spring now as the plant wont be actively growing now until next year when the light levels and temperature pick up again?

I find that if i bend them down now, and the winter's not too cold, they are rooted by the spring :)
