This might be an odd question but if I put two pumpkin plants right in the middle of the allotment where they will be fully exposed, can too much sun/heat harm them?there aren't  any sheltered  spots on my allotment.

why would you want to cover the whole patch with pumpkin plant? . you must be having one biggest plot "In the World" (clarkson style)
One kid is handful. Two kids.... Example for chaos theory. Hats off to my mum who managed three...

pumpkins love sun & heat  :D  I'd be more concerned about wind if it is an exposed plot.  I have built a pallet fence round my squash bed (roughly 25 feet x approx 16 feet) and stapled plastic sheeting on the pallets for an effective wind break - the fencing also makes it slightly warmer within the enclosure  ;)

PS  In case anyone is wondering, I love squashes of all kind hence have dedicated growing space just for them!

My favourite so far is Thelma Sanders sweet potato squash, with sensibly sized fruit that are pretty to look at, that store very well through the winter....and I think they taste great too

I have never grown pumpkins before as its my first year with the allotment..

Planted 5 seeds the other night and 3 have shown up today! They are neon F1 variety and look quite big on the packet.. does anyone have any experience of these ?

Are they best in my conservatory (doesnt go below 11) until I can get them planted out sometime ?

Keep your pumpkin plants indoors until the weather warms up, especially the night temp. But pot them on if the roots show through the holes at the bottom of the pot. Pumpkin plants grow quickly and they don't like their roots restricted. If you run out of space and have to plant out, harden them off and cover with fleece at night.
There is no better show of antisipation than a man sowing seeds in a field.

Down where we are Dan I am hoping to get pumpkins out by the end of May. They will be pretty big by then.  :nowink: :nowink:

Last year I ended up having one plant each in those morrisons pots, before hardening them off and planting out (did it third week of May last year but this seems colder somehow)

Hope that helps  :) :)
