pumpkins ?
« on: April 01, 2010, 15:49 »
could anyone give me any advice on how to sow pumpkins please and how to look after them best :)

i grew them once a few years ago but they never turned orange (they were yellow) and the skin was really soft like courgettes  :tongue2: no good for carving

thanks  :)

Were they supposed to be orange? there are so many kinds you may have chosen a yellow variety. I can not remember the name of the ones I plant for carving but it is something like jack o lantern.

Once cut, you have to ripen them in the sun, in the greenhouse or on a sunny windowledge for a couple of weeks so that the skin can harden up :)

You start them off inside, treat them the same as a courgette. They like a lot of manure/compost on planting and a lot of water to succeed. I fed mine with tomato feed towards the end of the season as well to get them a bit bigger :)

Good luck

"jack off all trades" is a good pumpkin for carving and is orange. i planted a few in pots in the greenhouse this weekend.
Start at the beginning, and finish at the end!!

Make sure to plant the seeds thin side down to avoid them rotting.

Make sure to plant the seeds thin side down to avoid them rotting.

it pays to lightly rub the edges down with fine emry cloth to aid germination.soak in a dilute soloution of Maxicrop prior to sowing.and high temps 80f.

people planting them already   its far to early id say start planting may ish
they like plenty of manure and i mean plenty and not full sun id say not too shady and not to sunny. watch your variety choice if you want giant Atlantic be prepared for an evasion of vines. As people have said jack of all trades is a brilliant one good size doesnt take over the plot and left to ripen for abit they have a good skin on them and a lovely colour brilliant for carving.
forgot to say start them of inside in pots and move onto larger pots then plant out
if i can find a pic ill post of what size i plated them out  ;)
couldnt find one of my pics but i quick search turn up around about what i wanted

you want to plant them out at around about this size if that abit smaller  ;)
