Oh No!
« on: July 31, 2013, 13:43 »
I went into my jam/chutney store to find I had given my last jar of 2011 pear chutney to a neighbour!    It was an unlabelled jar of plum jam that lulled me into a false sense of security (and probably the few glasses of wine didn't help!).

Any suggestions for a good chutney I can make from something seasonal I can get from the supermarket and which will be ready for use as soon as it is made?

Not sure many chutneys will be ready straight away, my beetroot still takes three weeks plus and thats because we need it, i do an onion marmalade but thats about the same as the beetroot they seem to be the fastest.

Although hubby has eaten my courgette chutney within a day of it being made and he said it was fine, not sure i trust his taste buds though.

River Cottage Sticky onion marmalade was good and usable straight away.

Indeedy BQ - the pear chutney needed 3-4 months to mature and got better and better into its second year! (what is it with use by dates on shop bought chutney?)

Thanks Annen - just found it on the web so will give it a go as a stop gap!

Go to Kirstie's scrapbook on the channel 4 website and look for her boxing day chutney. I'm pretty sure she said that hers could be eaten immediately or kept.  :)

Onion marmalades,  and the River Cottage one is lovely.

Or this is one I use straight away especially for the BBQ parties.
900g tomatoes skinned and chopped
225g rough chopped onions
1 red pepper finely chopped
1 chilli finely chopped... you can add more if you like it hot
300ml white vinegar
100g demerara sugar
1 tsp salt
1 tsp paprika
1/4 tsp chilli powder optional

Usual method.
