I am new to hen keeping and have been reading posts so much good information

I have read on on RM and you mention Slurry to be painted on the coop what is this ? how do you make it or where can you buy it i live on the Wirral

Also why cant you use hay in the coop is it because of the dust?
adding a nesting box to coop is it ok to paint with cuprinol and how long do we need to keep hens out of it after painting

Hello Della,

The slurry is Diatomaceous Earth mixed into a paste with water and either a little poultry shield or detergent such as a washing up liquid.  This is then painted into the cracks and crevices inside the hen coop.  If you search for Hillfooters posts on Diatom Slurry he gives a good recipe.

You can buy Diatom powder online or you can go to a local agricultural supplies retailer.

I can't help with the cuprinol, I'm afraid; however, I'm sure that someone will be along to advise you about that .

hay is like miniature straws and is a wonderful ground for mites etc. There is also an issue with the dust. If you get sawdus make sure it is the dust free stuff

I use Cuprinol because it used to carry the bat safe logo, however, it does not carry this any more I don't know why. I still use it but in the summer first thing so that it has all day to dry before the chooks go back in.
