Wooden Hen house and run
« on: October 04, 2016, 22:33 »
I have just acquired a good size hen house and run 2.5 x 1 x 1.5 metres. Probably about 5 years old and needs some tlc before bringing into use. The apex roof (blockboard) has rotted at both eves and I will replace with new as had the roof of the nest box. The rest of it is quite salvageable. I have only had an Eglu up till now.

My questions are:-

1. After rubbing down should I use yacht varnish directly to the wood or treat it with something first?

2. Can I use the same varnish outside and in?

3. I think my wife would like it to look like a dolls house so could I paint and lacquer? Me I'm happy with natural wood colour

Much appreciated. Two big runs and one in each  Both laying well :D Can't trust old Hen not to bully my Speckled one :(

rip Sandy, rip Beryl, Henrietta

Know what would be nice in your garden, a few hens lol

I don't think you should paint your hen house with anything they could peck off.

Have a look at this page for a safe product to use:

Thanks Sally,

Had a look.  Paint £195.00   Hen House (or was that 6 ) £585.00 and a Gypsy Caravan type £2,850.00   Not my shopping area.

I thought Eglu was expensive  ;)

Googled coatings for hen houses and one suggested Wilko for products, now that's right up my street, especially as I got the hen house for the cost of taking it away :)

Still thanks again. I get to see how the other half live

I have always used Sadolin Wood preserver/stain.  It lasts for ages and in my experience does not get pecked off.  It always looks in good condition and is waterproof.

I used culprinol on the outside, but painted the inside with Hillfooters Slurry for any red mite.

I wasn't suggesting you use their services, Dan.  Just try a similar type of product

Our coop is hardwood ply and I've left that to fade on its own, but the door I've painted. To be honest using whatever came to hand in the shed, as is my way! As long as it's suitable for external use. Never thought about them pecking it off, though as long as it's maintained and doesn't go flaky probably OK?  No sign of any 'peckage' here anyway!
I give a lot of consideration to the inside. Mega scrub out, disinfect, and diatom every crevice.

I have just found out that my hen house is a Malaga, they still sell them on Amazon, and now keep pestering me to buy one

I put a new roof on it using 18mm marine ply and 12mm on the nest box as it was rotted through.

All the outside has been rot proofed using ronseal clear (couldn't get Cuprinol) then a good coat of Yacht Varnish, not bothered with the inside as it was still ok, other than the metal poop tray which was painted with hammerite and the wooden frame for this proofed and varnished. I think Henrietta is pleased with her new accomodation and left me a egg yesterday. She is a lovelly hen, even though she is a bully, and now coming up to 3 years old :)

Regarding red mite, how often should I treat the house, there is only one hen in it at present
