Winter Veg - When do we need to start?
« on: May 08, 2008, 12:52 »
Hi,

Could anyone give me advice re winter crops - I know it seems silly to be worrying when the summer stuff has just gone in but I don't want to be left wanting come November.

I have just started my purple sprouting at home ready to go in when my first earlies come out........could anyone recommend anything else I could start sooner rather than later

Thanks

parsnips, sprouts, swedes and leeks are the other usuals. Under cover you can start growing lettuces/calabrese/peas etc in late summer (I tried outdoors for peas lastyear, but they just don't make it).

cheers,

oh, and perpetual spinach is a winner, indoors or out (I live in Buxton, so cold winters) - make sure they're growing good by the end of the summer and they'll just keep going. (I've still got some from last year that I am harvesting again from)

cheers,

Derek

Are there any crops that prefer to follow others - I've been told that cabbages like to follow potatoes - does anyone have any experience of this or other happy pairings?

I believe most winter crops should be sown nowish, except for the few things mentioned and other winter salads.

Cabbage and leeks too.

Late June time sow winter cabbage such as Autumn King, late savoy,
primo and greyhound cabbage will give you spring greens, white sprouting is very good too. sow some cauli's too...just cut the last 2 of mine....planted last summer.

jen
sorry that should be January King,  mixing it up with carrots!!
