Earthing Potatoes
« on: May 18, 2012, 19:08 »
i have my first earlies which are due in a few weeks i have been earthing up as needed and have so far around 8-10" earthed up, however..... the stems have shot straight up and some are around exposed 4" from where they have been earthed up and now the soil is so high when i try to cover with more  it just falls back off,  is this going to be a problem to leave them like this or will they definatley need covering??

Thanks

You don't have to cover all the stem. It sounds like you've done as much as needs be. Just let them grow now.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Best to keep a bucket or two full of soil just to cover any spuds that show their faces.  Sun turns the spud green and the green bit just might be poisonous.    Cheers,    Tony.

Mine have been getting earthed up for three weeks now cant earth up any more  they will have to struggle  on by them selves now .
Not sure if we will get any frost hard enough to damage the growth now.
