slugs and beer
« on: May 31, 2008, 17:28 »
Just chatting with OH about getting the cabbages and broccoli out in the allotment. Currently doing very well in the seedbed, but will need to make some pigeon scarers and put down slug pellets.

Anyway, she says beer is good for keeping the slugs at bay. I'm not waisting good beer on slugs, but it seems any old cheap french rubbish may work.

Has anyone tried beer and if so can you recommend a brand?

I'm hoping the cheap stuff will work. Don't want to be pooring Old Speckled Hen on the lotty.

Thanks. There's an asda down the road. What do you do, just spread some saucers of beer round the plot? How quickly does it evaporate? Will i need to go down and top up everyday, is it worth fixing a shade over the beer to slow down the rate of evaporation? I hope the slugs don't mind warm beer.

I don't know how true this is as I've not tried it but my old course lecturer said that milk and lemonade work too.  Might be worth ago, I know I prefer beer to milk and lemonade anyway

Thanks. I've just found the slug and snail in the photo competition, so i'll give that a try. Thank you Jenny B.

Might put a few of beer down and a few of milk and lemonade and see what works. Is that milk and lemonade mixed together, or seperate?

Separate.  I would be really interested to know if it works.  Mind you if I were the slug I'd go for the beer everytime.  I would imagine it smells stronger than lemonade and milk.

The beer method definitely works. Last year, to hold the beer, I scrounged from a local company, a lot of the used plastic cups from vending machines that were just thrown away in the bin. I got my beer from my local pub, gave the landlord some empty four pint milk containers and he filled them with the slops at the end of the night. I would fish out at least six slugs from each one every morning I checked them. I buried them in the soil with about half an inch of the cup protruding above the surface.

Beer slops are apparently very good for growing giant pumpkins  :drunken:

Thanks Dave, I'll give that a go.

OK, a couple of beer, a few with milk, and some lemonade. I'll let you know how it goes.
