[Enfield Glen]

Well not the beer itself but the spent hops.

Watching Jamie and Jimmy on Friday they were saying that brewers usually give this away. We already have two Micro Breweries in Enfield and another larger one will be opening soon.

I have read that this can be composted but needs mixing with other matter.

Has anyone tried this before and have any advise or best way to use it. Seems it should be good source of nutrients.

As its free and they will be happy to offload it having a good use for it over the Allotment seems ideal. Also gives me a reason to visit their onsite shop!

I use a lot of them, either composted or just dig them in
Helps to open up the rather heavy loam on my new plot.

I have been lured here under false pretenses! I thought it might be an advert for free beer!! However, I would gladly settle for some free spent hops to add to the compost heap. I must try one of the local breweries. Thanks for the tip.

When I was living in the midlands, I was just a mile from The Old Sawley Brewery. When they were still brewing in their pub and the volumes were fairly small, I used to get all their spent hops and barley and compost them together. Once they built the brewery and volumes increased, a farmer took all the barley for animal feed and disposed of any of the hops I couldn't handle.
Once I knew I was moving to S. Wales, I had 3 priorities:-
1. Find allotment
2. Find house.
3. Find local brewery
Just a couple of miles away is the Hopcraft/Waen Brewery and I've been taking all their hops since May 2018, and they're being dug into plot number 2 ready for growing this season

Hmmm, I asked my local brewery and they quoted prices for the spent hops that were far more expensive than buying ready made compost...

Sounds like they didn't understand the "spent" bit!

It's the same with the breweries I've contacted. Now they know there is demand they want to charge.

The hops will provide excellent organic matter for the soil, but may not contribute much by way of nutrition / fertiliser, compared to actual fertilisers.
