Best for Jacket Potatoes?
« on: September 19, 2006, 18:13 »
Any advice on the best potatoes jackets ie big ones? Heard somebody suggest Kondor - any experience of them? Or know where to buy 'em?

Grew Cara this year. Not bad but loads of small ones (possibly planted too close)

Also - removing all but one eye to get big spuds? Old wives tale or true?

Thanks

I just had some baked Winston (first early, harvested months ago, but seems to have kept well) and they seem good. Leaving them in the ground for as long as possible seems to guarantee you have bigger spuds.
wistfully hoping to one day be mostly organic gardener in North London.

I've just harvested my Desiree spuds, and have sizes ranging from marbles to blooming massive - big even for jackets!

When we moved here 4 years ago, the man who looked after the garden for the old lady next door, gave me some of her spuds.  Desiree, and one of them weighed over 1 and a half lbs!!!!

So it wasn't how many spuds do you want dear, but how many bits of this spud do you want??? lol

Thanks all, looks like the favourite is Desiree. I'll make my order on Sunday at the allotment hut.

Thanks again

Yes, next year, probably around March.  Just lifted this year's maincrop (Cara). Mixed results, some large, some small. Not a huge crop but probably due to to the dry summer.
