Frogs in compost?
« on: August 04, 2007, 00:11 »
Hi all,

I went to turn my compost in my compost bin tonight and found a frog.
Is this normal?
I am now worried about when i need to turn or use the compost, what if I fork a frog to death?
OMG I would hate that
Like to be as nice as possible to our planet!

Lily, if frogs are living in your compost then there's definitely not enough heat to properly 'cook' the compost; I'd say none at all because frogs love it cool.

Thanks for the advice guys.
I was thinking about the heat side of things myself.
This is the first time I have tried composting and was unsure so set about doing some reading. I am now however more confused than ever. I found stuff saying a hot compost bin is better and stuff saying cold heaps are the best.
All I know is that the stuff that was at the bottom of mine is starting to turn compost like. I might try some of the sugestions to get the temp up but i now have to think about not cooking the frogs!
Unless I have you all round for a bbq!

    Compost methods, are like anything else, personal choice. If you want some fast, it must be 'hot'. If you're lazy or unable, and aren't in a rush, then cool is fine too. One is not better than the other. Unless you add the seeds of pernicious weeds, which won't die in cool compost and will grow once you spread the compost. Hot composting will kill those seeds if you must add them. As for the frogs, they'll move out once things get a bit warm. Drat, there goes the free BBQ.
Personally, I don't have time to fuss so I let it do it's own thing with occasional sprinkling with dissolved activator or just water. Next year I have nice stuff waiting (just don't keep adding to a finished pile) and I start with a fresh bin for the current year. 8)

I have toads regularly hibernating in my compost heap and had an accident once, that put me right off winter digging
