sodium chlorate
« on: July 25, 2007, 23:08 »
now i knows it's not organic, but i'm not going to put it on my plot, heavens forbid!!!  it's for my house back garden.  it's not properly cultivatable as it's made of building rubble (jerry built 50's property).  it's over-run with bindweed and every other weed imaginable.  my idea is to sodium chlorate it then grass seed it come the spring.
my only real concern is for my cat (beautiful Prince) i imagine it will be poisonous to him.  how long should i keep him away from it?  any advice would be most welcome.
thank you fellow allotmenteers :)

I don't think I would use it if you have a cat Laura

It's very drastic and can last for ages.  There are better options for you !

It is highly toxic to animals and humans, breaking down red blood cells
News to me.  The HDRA used to sell it in their organic catalogue.

many thanks Aunt Sally, the sodium chlorate and red (for danger) watering can have been duly returned to Wilkos.  i think i should stick to my organic and enviromently friendly morality in "all" my gardens.  i knew it was a good idea to ask here before i did anything drastic.
i'm going to use the old manual weed killing techinque of cutting, digging and pulling.
Princey says thank you too! :D
Laura
p.s.  i swapped the chemicals for some red hammerite paint to spruce up the fabulous manual lawn mower (Qualcast Panther) that i got from freecycle
