sweetpeas
« on: July 09, 2007, 13:56 »
Hello All, I planted a sweetpea plant in the border under my drawing room window earlier this year. It has grown into a lovely climbing plant and is now about 6' tall. I have bound it around with raffia to hold it together and I have fixed a wire to the wall for it to climb up (which it is doing)...my question is, should I 'prune' it at all, or just keep it bound together to stop it falling over? :D
trying to be organic....

You shouldn't prune

The more you pick the flowers the more it will flower.  DO NOT let it set any pods as this will stop it flowering.

Hey, is that an annual or a perennial sweetpea? The perennial types that come back every year you can prune to the ground when they get frosted. The annual types will die anyway at the end of the year. But don't prune either type during the growing season.
