My runner bean and Pea pole thing..... (picks)
« on: March 21, 2012, 19:00 »
I dont know what you call them, but anyway... went down to Poundland and got 3 runner bean and pea nets.... but there not up to the job in my opinion, the holes in the net are far too small for beans and peas to get in to the holes, there for protection and cover really, then it dawned on me, I have loads of netting all around me with the right size holes in them, builders barrier, OK its blue and not green, but its spot on, what do you think? (my first attempt, and its all scrap poles, and a telescopic pole (red and white) on the top to holes it, and bamboo to stake it down

If Its Not Growing... Its Dead.

How are you going to pick all the beans that will be hanging down on the inside?
I`m left handed, what`s your excuse?

You will need more upright supports otherwise you`ll never fight your way up the middle. ;)

I don't think runner beans will be able to hold on to the net.  Unlike peas it doesn't send out tendrils to grab on, it twines around and needs something like a cane or wire to support it.  Also, it will be a heck of a job removing the peas from the netting when they are done.

Ok I will see how they do this year, if its not viable, then I have some stainless steel 2 inch square fencing I will prop up against the frame and try that

I did my runner beans up triangular cane wigwams and  they were great last year.

Well done Dopey, by the look of the plot though, you're well set up for lots peas with that net - not that high though, see what they say on the seed packet!

When runner beans get going, they swap around the poles anyway, so by the end of the season, they're all over the place, and climbing around each other at the top as well!

...and I still like the way you've got your plot laid out; good stuff...
