Lola the twisted beaked hen
« on: May 23, 2010, 09:43 »
Hi everyone,

I bought a seabright (I named her Lola) quite a while back, but there is one problem... her beak is completely twisted!!
The breeder was going to dispose of her because of her deformed beak, but luckily we were going to buy some chickens that day and saved her life!
Lola is a very happy little girl, but has to eat ex bat crumb because she can't manage pellets. She sticks out her tounge and the crumbs get stuck to it  :D
Around once a month we have to clip her beak using our rabbit clippers otherwise she would find it even harder to eat.
When we feed the chickens a handful of corn, Lola knows she can't eat it, so doesn't even bother to try and runs off to fill herself up on ex bat crumb

I thought I would share my experience with you all  ;)
All lives are precious.

1 of my crested cream legbars has a twisted beak too. She manages to eat and drink fine though. I belive its a birth defect or caused through interbreeding (ie brother and sister) Glad Lola copes well with it, Loopy does  :D

Sorry to everyone who's waiting for the photos of Lola's beak. I'm not able to post the photos of her as the sizing is too big or something like that  :tongue2:   ::)

Many apologies  ;)

Looks like if the top half of the beak was trimmed a bit it would help a lot with feeding.

Yes, those photos were taken quite a while back and just before she had her monthly clip.

have u tried her on layers mash, it is kinda powdery and easier to lick.
ps it can also happen at point of hatching....i had a perfick little chick, beak pipped out etc, and her brothers and sisters rolled her around in the incie  and bent her beak. She didnt hatch after that  :(

Thanks, I do feel sorry for Lola (as you can see, she looks quite ugly because of her beak  :(  ) and it's nice to hear that Loopy gets along okay too  :)

I don't think we have tried layers mash, I 'll look in to it. Thank you TeaPots

I hope she'll continue to do well and thrive. Bless her  :D

My hen has a split in her beak and one bit is shorter than the other. I never noticed it when I bought her but it became more noticeable as she got older. It doesn't seem to cause her any problems though
