Lettuce in a pot starting to seed
« on: May 29, 2009, 06:38 »
What should i do with it, is it ok to cut out the seed head and eat it still.  Im starting to realize thats i have lots of learning to do about this growing lark hahaha. i get stuff that grows well but never sure when to crop it.  I know things are lettuces but not sure what type ekk i really should have marked stuff up as to what variety as well.  Oh well i have started doing that now.
Thanks
Kris

I am sure that I read recently that when veg goes to seed it is still OK to eat it all.
Labelling really does help  :tongue2:

Eat it soon!  Bolting lettuces can become bitter and tough.

I'm getting more bitter as I grow older too.

Lettuce will bolt if it is too hot, they like a bit of shade.
Cheese makes everything better.

Hi Kris,  keep your lettuce well watered from the moment of transplant, helps to prevent bolting, if you don't have a shady corner construct something that will provide a bit of shade.
I find the  'Webbs' type very good, quick to mature and the only home grown one that keeps crisp in the fridge.  Good Luck.
There is no better show of antisipation than a man sowing seeds in a field.

I once deliberately let a lettuce go to seed.  It was a very strange looking but decorative plant.  None of my friends knew what it was!

Cheers,

Gillie
