what to sow in may, june, july
« on: May 17, 2009, 10:28 »
hi
am new to the site and veggy growing. My dad had an allotment many years ago, i have just got one all be it shared. Only just got keys and started digging over. we have put a row of potatoes in yesterday. I was wondering what we could sow straight into the ground over the next couple of month,s as and when we get the ground clear. There will be a bit of a hap hazard planting regime this year due to the fact we are late. So guys and gals what can we sow straight into the ground of the next 2 or 3 months or maybe even long that we can harvest this year or maybe  next.
    Awaiting your knowledgeable reply,s

Hi gorymorph and welcome to the forums!  There is still so much that you can plant and get harvests from this year.  Off the top of my head, how about:

beeetroot
swede
purple sprouting broccoli
radish
salad leaves
carrots
peas
turnip
spinach
runner beans

lots and lots of others too!

Have a look at the Month by Month guides on this site. As someone reminded us the other day, this site is not just a forum.

http://www.allotment-garden.org/garden_month.php

Remember stuff down for April will probably catch up.

And welcome!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Well I have just instigated the age old tradition of "Kale sowing Sunday".

Six trays of the best winter veg you can get (In my opinion).

Can't wait.

Hi,
I too have some kale that I sowed into pots earlier in the year that desperately need to go into the ground, can I plant them out now? and if so do I have to net them, or can they stay uncloaked?

I would suggest that you net them otherwise you will have lots of cabbage white butterflies laying their yellow eggs on the leaves.  These eggs then become caterpillars and the kale, as they say, will be history!

Oriental brassicas.
Winter salad crops.
Courgettes.
French Beans.
Early peas and broad beans for a late crop.

The last three would be best this month, but I did peas and dwarf french beans in June two years ago and had a nice crop by late summer.

Glad to here you had success with a later sowing of peas stripeycat. Mine have come through and now nibbled by the dreaded weevil as are my broad beans and what a sorry sight they look as well. I am thinking of re sowing peas what variety did you sow?  - too late now for broad beans - oh well no broad beans again this year. :(

It's not too late for Broad Beans, you will easily get a crop yet, and of course later on you can sow for overwintering, but plenty of time for this years harvest yet, it's still only May.

Last year I had made space in a new plot mid summer and sowed runners and dwarf french beans and beetroot in early to mid July. I got a small but useful crop off the dwarf french before the cold got them, but the runners almost made it but not quite (died when beans were 10cm long); beetroot never formed proper beets and went straight to seed this year.
