Poorly Chicken
« on: March 14, 2010, 11:29 »
I introduced 3 new chickens to my existing 3 from last year (and the cockerel Bert) a week ago, there was a little bit of bullying to the 3 newbies and they still keep themselves separate but nothing drastic. But yesterday one of last years (Daisy) was hiding where the newbies had been, I left her alone but she was still there late afternoon. I pulled her out to check her over and discovered a rather nasty small hole in her side under the wing. The blood had dried so I think it must have happend late the previous day. I have cleaned her up and sprayed the area with wound powder. She has been overnight in a box in a cool dim room in the house away from the others. Her comb has gone dry and very dark and she is not moving, but she has snuggled down in to the straw overnight. She has food and water but does not seem to be taking either. I have tried putting water to her beak but she ignores it. Her eyes are still bright. Anyone any ideas at to what may have happened to her, am I doing the right thing keeping her totally separate from the others?

She could be in shock, keep her in a dark quiet area and monitor her and the wound. Do you have a syringe so that you can get some fluids into her?
Staffies are softer than you think.

Thanks, we have managed to get a little bit of warm water in her. Will do it again in an hour, then after another hour. Does that sound OK? If that works will put some mash in to tempt her. She is not moving now and has her eyes closed.

You could try putting some honey in her water and syringing it into her beak.
She could be just conserving her energy by sleeping but just to be sure is your vets contactable on a Sunday?

Thank you all, we have cremated her and had a lovely wake with friends. She has gone to better place but we will not forget her.
