Hens can swear
« on: July 16, 2010, 09:28 »
This year has been so hot, we've had some locusts emerge.  So far, not too many. Hope they don't get to plague proportions. They're pretty ugly creatures.

I spotted one up a tall plant the other day and whacked it with my shoe. Only damage done was a broken leg (its, not mine). I gingerly picked it up and decided to give it to the hens to encourage them to eat more if they see them.

Both gave a jolly good squawk - no doubt in my mind they were swearing in shock and awe but expletives deleted for the sensitive of heart and mind - and jumped back, beaks open in alarm at the size of the thing, it's waggling legs and unpleasant looking armour and general weaponry. Then one of them bravely gave it a stab with her beak, got no response other than more waggling of legs, and gobbled the thing down. I imagine it must have tickled a bit inside her but she went off, quite pleased with herself.
