I think everyone (well nearly everyone) is after a cider press at a good price... I've had no joy so far so would be interested also... looking like I may have to DIY one using a wooden frame and car jack... which is possibly pushing the limits of Mrs B's patience with 'weird things about the place' - hey ho

Cheers,
Balders

Try your local wine suppliers, mine in Lincoln rents them out.
Sis bought me one for Christmas, yet to use, but it is said that freezing the apples first gets  more juice.

Before spending too much check that you can get a wide range of apples  commercial ciders often contain 20+ variaties including some with a high tannin content

It's a shame you live too far away from me. I'd loan you my stuff.

It's not so much the press, but the scratter that causes a mess and will get you and your immediate surroundings horribly sticky. The smell is beautiful!

Originally I had the apples and no scratter and so used a bucket and wooden pounder like you see on the Tribal African programmes where they are crushing wheat. That's some of the hardest work I've ever done. Then I got a garden shredder. The worms got my apple pulp.

I use as few chemicals as possible, so I heated the apple juice to 60C for 5 mins before adding generic cider yeast.

Last year I made about 120 litres. It's one of the very best drinks I've ever made.
