Plants for hanging baskets in windy areas
« on: March 25, 2009, 17:41 »
Can anyone recommend plants for hanging baskets that can tolerate a buffeting now and again? I've found that bacopa is better than trailing lobelia but am stuck on anything else that's colourful.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I've been meaning to try a permanent basket planting with stonecrops and suchlike - they should tolerate both wind and drought better than traditional bedding.

Is your garden warm enough for osteospermum?  They cope well in coastal Cornwall, even with Atlantic gales, but aren't reliably hardy up country.

I did have some osteospermums in pots last year and they were lovely except for the fact that they have a rest period between flowering. I forgot to take them in the greenhouse to over-winter so I think I have lost them! I visited St Ives (fabulous) and saw them there. Maybe if I plant them in the ground they might have a better chance of survival.
