Tefal Jam maker
« on: August 13, 2009, 20:28 »
Hi,
I have just joined and would welcome some advice. I have just bought a Tefal Jam maker ,but can't find a simple recipe for green tomato and onion chutney, with not too many ingredients. Got loads of tomatoes just not ripening in greenhouse.
Can anyone help as I am not sure if you can just use a conventional recipe?
Cheers Joanne.

Welcome Joanne, if you'd been around here for a while you would know that we have a longstanding joke about me longing for a jam maker and gadgets in general ::) but I'm still using a microwave.

We have a section on here for recipes and there is a link at the top of this page, Then select chutneys, there are a couple to choose from. I've copied one supplied by one of our members, I think it was Pam. Alternatively I can recommend Val's book :D

Ingredients:

    * 500g green tomatoes
    * 500g  red onion
    * 250g sultanas
    * 250g brown sugar
    * 2 tbsp Salt
    * 1 tsp cayenne pepper
    * 1 tsp ground green cardamom
    * 500ml Malt vinegar

Method:

Chop everything up, no need for a perfection, and put it in a good heavy based pan .

Bring it to the boil and then turn down the heat , simmer for about an hour until reduced to a thick pulp.

Spoon into sterilised jars and enjoy either after standing for a while to let flavours develop or if you are a little glutton like myself grab the cheese and crackers and go watch TV .

You might need to do a much smaller batch to fit in a jam maker.

I'm not jealous, I'm NOT jealous, I'M NOT JEALOUS, it's not working :lol:

Hi Poolfield,
Thank you for your reply. I've only had the jam maker since Wednesday and I've made 2 lots of strawberry jam. First lot got pinched by family. I have to say it is delicious and so easy in the machine.
I had already copied this recipe, just wasn't sure if I had to do anything differently.
Also do you think breadmaker  recipes for jam would work the same?
Hope you get your machine soon. You'll love it.
All the recipes are for 1Kg of produce so I think this should work.
Cheers Joanne.

The chutney is absolutely delicious. Sending you the aromas.
Tried the recipe for apple jelly.
Not sure if that has worked, but it's still a learning curve.lol
Of to make more strawberry jam. They're the cheapest fruit in Tesco just now. I've got this down pat. (thats just asking for a disaster).

I made stawberry syrup with lumps of fruit the other day by accident. According to Val's book we call it conserve instead of jam and it's ok then :lol:

Update on the apple jelly.It did set .
Had it on toast for lunch. Scrummy.
Does jelly not set till it goes cold in the jar? This is why I thought it had gone wrong.

Yep, it only reaches it's final consistancy when cold. Glad it was a success :D
