Broad beans ready yet?
« on: May 12, 2008, 21:49 »
When do you know when your broad beans are ready for picking?
And is it best to harvest in the morning or evening or doesnt it matter?
Do you blanch or not?    as you might be able to guess I have not grown these before

I picked some of mine yesterday and ate them whole:

Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Hello sawnee, I would pick them as near as possible to when you are going to eat them. They are fab with parsley sauce by the way. If you are freezing them do as you would with any other and blanch as normal. If you can feel and see the beans inside then they are quite likely ready. They taste yummy when they are smaller anyway. Enjoy.
I know less today than I did yesterday, and I knew nothing then!

We did pick the tops out on saturday as a few had a covering of blackfly, the ones without the BF tasted great, my two yearold had to be dragged away after tasting them, she was happily plucking the plants of leaves and eating them

If you blanch them dont waste the water. My dad made the most beautiful broad bean wine using the water.
Oh for those halcyon days of England long ago
