im new to this too am gonna try charleston grey water melon and grow them on a ridge outside with a cloche over them any one who thinks this is a bad idea please say

Hopefully you've already got young plants underway 'cause melons need a very long growing season and lots of heat and warmth and sunshine to produce anything edible!

The ridge and cloche are good, bigsprouts, just be sure the ridge has loads of compost and or manure as melons are hungry feeders. And they need lots of water. Once you have about 3 young melons per plant, I'd snip off the rest of the vine or any other flowers so that the plant will concentrate it's energy on decent sized fruit in your shorter growing season rather than trying to put out loads of fruit which haven't a chance of succeeding.

I had 2 melons germinate out of a packet of 5 seeds.  My melons last year fell off and the biggest was only grapefruit sized, the other 2 like tennis balls.  I kept them watered on top of a pile of old goat manure, but they were in the polytunnel, would they have been better outside do you think???
