cleanest way of collecting free manure?
« on: September 02, 2007, 20:39 »
Any ideas? We borrow a friend's car usually and I'm trying to think of the most clean and scent-free method of getting some free manure from a stable to my allotment. No tow-hitch, no roof rack
wistfully hoping to one day be mostly organic gardener in North London.

Carefully

I put it in thick builders rubble sacks, plastic on the seats etc, windows open  :!:

lay one of those cheapy blue tarps in the boot and up the sides and do the rubble sack thing like richy said. Hose down the tarp ready for next time then.

There's a bloke on our site who used to just put it in his car - few bags on back seat, bag on front seat. Probably didn't give many lifts though.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Read somewhere ? a good idea I thought , having got the same problem , use plastic dustbins with lids on , size to choose would depend on how strong you are at lifting in and out of the car when full.

Unless you can find someone with a trailer or maybe look in local paper for man with a van advert .

I take my daughter to the stables twice a collect and collect loads of horse poo + stable straw:

Polypropylene tarps leak, and all bags evetually get small holes and leak - use a thick polythene sheet under the bags.

It's not just the liquid seeping out the bottom, but the flies getting out the top - keep a fly swat (or 2) in the car and use a polythene sheet over the top of the bags.

Stable straw is normally drenched with horse urine, the smell of which gets into the upholstery/interior linings - completey encapsulate.

Wash everything after use and don't leave anything in the car overnight.

Yep, that was me that suggested plastic dustbins with lids. That's how I do it when I can get any farm manure or bark mulch. We have 2 cars, a sedan and a station wagon, and no trailers. I still put down old plastic tablecloths first to catch any messes from where the bins might sit while filling, etc. The filled bins are often heavy so I make sure I take a passenger to help lift them on and off, and it's well worth the effort. Once empty I simply hose down the bins, tip them to dry, then they're back to their usual job. I takes a few trips to get enough poo but that's the tradeoff for not having a trailer or suitable vehicle. A neighbour of mine made weekly visits to a farmer friend and brought back garbage bags full of old manure in his reasonably new van. He wouldn't admit it but I often saw him airing out and cleaning his van. I'll stick to bins.

Nothing to do with the car, Mrs. Digger was holding the map upside down and we got a bit lost.
