Aphids at this time of year??
« on: February 17, 2013, 15:01 »
I've been over-wintering canna lilies in the garage a la Monty Don (cut them down and put then somewhere dark) but today noticed they are not only growing but the new shoots are infested with little green aphids.
I am sure these are really tasty for the aphids but where have they come from?? They weren't there when I put them in the garage I am sure of it. More to the point, how do I get rid of them? I don't want them having a go at anything else.
I have my own cement mixer and not afraid to use it!!

spray them with water with a little washing up liquid in  ;)

It only needed one egg to be on the plant when you brought them under cover, they breed soooo very quickly   :(

I've had aphids appear on supermarket herbs on my kitchen windowsill.

I know I got some greenfly/aphids on herbs on the same windowsill last year but they can't possibly survive on the window when there are no plants can they!!

There weren't any aphids on the herbs when I bought them. ???

I potted up some "living salads" and now they have grown somewhat, I have found greenfly which I had had to spray with washing up liquid mix as recommended.  I am worried they will infest the potato tuber chits, as I have had happen in the past!

I had a massive outbreak of greenfly on pansies outside in hanging baskets.

Even survived a layer of snow on them too, sadly the pansies didn't.

I don't think anything else was infected and I'm using the soapy H2O trick. Hopefully that will get rid of them.
