Onion bahjis

Onion bahjis

On a whim, i bought a packet of gram flour, with a view to making bhajis. There is a recipe on the side, but i wondered if anyone has any tips or recipes for making them?

just make sure that they're not too big........or the inside will still be raw when the outside is cooked...yuk yuk

Thanks mum, I wonder if you could part cook the onions first then, obviously not too much, but just a bit? really looking forward to them, as I'm wheat intolerant now & can't have naan bread any more (but poppadoms & bhajis OK if I make them myself)

IMO It's the raw gram flour thats yuk...onions are ok  :lol:

Keep saying I am going to make them one day, I saw a recipe on tv yesterday the programme was the hairy bikers one they looked scrummy :)

you can grate the onion, carrot, potato, courgette etc as then it cooks quicker.  I make lotty pakora and we eat them straight out the pan with mayo or mango chutney

I try and get spinach, cauli, onion, bit of broc or cauli, carrot, potato and peas if they're in season.  Don't make them like the big fat ball things they sell in the shops  :D

I don't make them often, but I do sometimes part cook the onions sliced very thinly in the microwave to soften them first.  Sometimes if the bahjis are a bit too big, the onions are still a bit hard.

Plenty of lemon juice
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

There's a recipe for bahjis on Cevenol Kitchen that looks like a good one. I haven't tried it yet, but I will do soon as I get the chance.

Have tried quite a few recipes for Bhajis but my favourite is this one
y3FcPZrWEL4She actually semi cooks them then allows them to cool and then squeezes them into a flattish patty and then pops them back in the oil for a few mins, it works really well and ensures they are cooked all the way through and they also freeze very well too.

Thanks all - had loads of spinach, so made pakoras instead which were yummy - my 3 older kids ate them  :ohmy:
Next thing to try is to copy waitrose's sweet potato falafel - yum!
