Despite this year being the worst I can remember for sunshine I have had my best Tomatoes and Peppers ever in over ten years.

I have no idea why, as these generally require a good sunny Summer.

All I can put it down to is that for the first time this year I planted both in compost with added John Innes.

I used Westland multipurpose with added John Innes from Homebase.

Crazy I know but it must have made the difference. ;)

Anyway here are a couple of pics which I wouldn't have imagined could be true given the hideous Summer this year.

Dan. ;D

must be  a case of finding the right method/technique i think.

for the first time this year i added bottomless pots to my grow bags and we're still picking the tomatoes off the plants in the mini greenhouse now! i think they've finally stopped ripening out there so might have to bring the rest in to go with the 2 trays of cherry toms that are ripening slowly but thats even after weeks of bowls looking like this:

did you manage to get your peppers to ripen?  i have yet to manage to be successful with peppers.

Likewise (apart from the outside toms that got blight again).

Greenhouse toms now finished, but still plenty of peppers left.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

mine got blight outside but that was after the most of the harvest luckily,  despite the flap being open for the plastic greenhouse it has obviously protected them enough from the blight.

Some other crazy things in my garden, i have sugar snap peas flowering!! and i still have runner beans growing, tho they have finally stopped producing flowers....

Almost all of my tomatoes got blight this year, in or out. My peppers are much better most or all years, so no, not for me.

Well as it was my first year growing, I have to agree that it was my best year yet!

I only grew cherry toms (but have decided to grow 'normal' ones next year too) and had quite a lot, the only problem was they ripened one or two at a time so I never had enough all together to do anything with, just mucnhed them straight off the plant as they were ready!

My peppers took a lot longer to get going but I have about 5 or 6 now. They are still on the plant as I was hoping they'd ripen and change colour (I don't like green peppers but love red, yellow and orange!) but alas, nothing, so I'm just going to have to pick them now and find something to do with them! Can't see them going red now...

Organic...so far!

Very impressed with your ability to grow and ripen bananas, though, Jenny!  Hertfordshre must have warmed up since I left home
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I grew my first outdoor toms this year and i must say they indeed have thrived. No blight (lucky mee :D) I put that down to being ruthless with cutting the leaves. Here is for another good year.
