Welcome to the forum Pete :)
It will help us answer questions if you put your location in your profile .
Click on the left-hand of the top green bar [Allotment Garden] you'll find lots of info and links in there.
Good luck.

Hi Pete
Take a browse in the diary section, they are really useful to record your progress and to look back on to see if you left advice for yourself or you're repeating the same mistakes this year as last year. The diary comment pages enable your peers to encourage and advise you. They are ideal winter reading when its' too dark and wet to actually be on your allotment.
My first diary can be found http://chat.allotment-garden.org/index.php?topic=100234.0
Good luck and remember take it slow and enjoy the journey

Hi Pete,
Welcome from me too. Re planning, it can depend a lot on what your plot is like - if it's on a slope, how well-drained it is, how much shade etc. There's a lot of info on this site to get you started. As for figuring out what to put where, some people have used the free trial of this http://www.growveg.com/freetrial.aspx (http://www.growveg.com/freetrial.aspx) as it works out spacings for you. Personally I prefer a pencil and some graph paper.. :nowink:
Good luck!
