growing leeks for the first time !
« on: February 16, 2012, 21:07 »
they are currently growing in small seed trays in my conservatory and are now about an inch high what can I transfer them into now ? I will be transferring them to my allotment eventually. I have done  a search but there is nothing relevant :)
some people are like slinkys......they're really good for nothing, but they still bring a smile to your face as you push them down the stairs!!

transfer to a cat litter tray or window box.

You've made a lot of work for yourself as you could have sown them at the correct spacing like this

Mum's nicked my link again!

As for less root disturbance, leeks don't mind it a bit. The tops and most of the roots get chopped of mine prior to transplanting. I - and a lot of others - grow a couple of hundred or more. Not doing those in paper pots!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

If it were so, we wouldn't have been doing it for generations.

There is a debate over trim/no trim, but not over whether it lets in disease. Leeks are very tough - look at what they have to sit through over winter.

We're quite good about different paths here...  :D
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Don't worry Matt, the debate, or is is debates (?), was well before your time and is well buried. It will no doubt pop up again this year.

The main concern over leeks at the moment is leek moth. Got to the Midlands and heading north.
