Growing garlic for the first time
« on: February 24, 2010, 17:56 »
I'm a newbie so please don't grumble if the answer to this question is on this site somewhere !!!
I have heard that if you grow garlic - then the ground becomes unsuitable to grow anything else for a few years. Is this true or a myth ?
I am planning to grow the garlic in a raised bed with leeks, onions and shallots.

I wonder if what was meant was that you shouldn't grow it again in the same place for 3 or 4 years?

Crop Rotation is based around grouping the same sorts of things together (Peas/Beans, Brussels/Cabbages, Carrots/Parsnips, Leeks/Onions), and rotating them (in that order - cabbages follow beans) so that the same bit of land doesn't see the same crop again for 3 or 4 years - the time depends on how much space you have and how many "zones" you can make, obviously the more the better.

Sorry if you know all that already.

Thanks again all. Will plant my garlic in my raised bed on a 3 year crop rotation plan with confidence. Where I planted garlic last year is to have spuds in it this year so will keep you all posted on quality of my pots!

Its certainly not a myth that garlic is deadly to vampires. I have been growing it for 10 years and never seen a vampire once. :D :D
Sets a low standard and fails to achieve it.

Certainly hope its a myth, I've got it planted all over my plot.

6 varieties including Early Purple Wight, Albigensian Wight, Wight Christo, an unknown variety from a friend and I can't remember the other two (must check the labels). Trying lots to see which grows best or I prefer.

All planted in the Autumn (though I think one is supposed to be Spring planted), I got a bit carried away and stuck them all in at the same time. Not surprisingly the Early Purple was well up in a few weeks, closely followed by Albigensian the others were all just showing a couple of mm when the first snows hit but have put on lots of growth since.

Did a check around it all while pulling a few weeds yesterday. Planted 137 cloves, only one is a no show (may not even have been planted). Good quality, large seed bulbs from Wight Garlic Farm. The garden centre stuff I planted last year wasn't worth the effort.
