Title: Broad Beans
Post by: Longshanks on October 23, 2018, 10:22
Is it OK to plant broad beans in a polytunnel?  I usually get black fly on mine and wondered if being in a polytunnel might help.

Autumn or winter planted ones will do fine but I would avoid spring/summer cropping ones as I find they don't like the increased heat so much and don't set as well. If you plant outside now you should also avoid blackfly as these are more prevalent after these type have usually finished cropping.

I grew some last winter year in my tunnel and they really didn't do well. I'm going to try again and if no joy this winter will call it a day for beans.

The BB were doing well until Good Friday and the heat got to them and they all looked a bit droopy. I watered them copiously and they recovered a bit, but will have another look later. They looked like the Day of the Triffids, but didn't want to butcher them too much.

Subsequently, I have a bumper crop that is still giving. I think I'll cobble together another PT for next winter to grow them as they're taking up space where I want to grow cucumbers.
