Some others have taken to growing ones own..... on a little plot in the garden.  ;)

40 acres of veg?... Just a mere corner of ones garden used so far.  ::)

Outlay to date? Cost of gardeners, one would imagine

I get the best part of my seed from end of season sales or in quantity from Moles Seeds and share.

I've just put in over 250 bean plants at a cost of zero.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

That's perfectly correct, I believe. It's the image enhancing thing - working for HRH and crowd.
I wonder if One helps out with the weeding?  ???

I had considered watercress once upon a time but thought you had to have runnning water to avoid the build-up of something nasty

We've been seeing a good return on the plot of late:
  • strawberries turned into jam (£2 something a pot in Tescos for the best)
  • huge lettuce - mixed types (that too is dear and we eat lots of it)
then there's broadbeans.... and looking forward to the first earlies potatoes
Added on to this is the fun of escaping to the plot... it is a rewarding hobby!  :)

It is our first year so far we have spent   £15 on allotment rent £10 on various tools from a boot sale, got given a shed , about £30 on seeds and sets £20 on compost and £50 on some winter veg plants, canes, wire etc. Also invested in a rotavator £150 and lge green house £60.We were given a lot and inherited some wire from previous plot owner.so all together not too bad.Plan to grow everything from seed next year as already have nearly all i need .We are also looking into getting some hens .We have already saved £4 a week off our shopping bill with new pots and endless supply of lettuce ready and with winter veg and beans ,beetroot,  sweetcorn, courgette, radish all still to come will easily break even this year ,and will be eating more veg than we ever have in the past too!!!!

"Plan to grow everything from seed next year as already have nearly all i need"

If I've read that right as being "seed" then beware seed that needs to be sown fresh.  (Parsnip is the only one I can think of, although I think that Sweetcorn may need to be fresh).

I bought lots of seed in the half-price-Summer-sales last year, and my Parsnip germination has been a disaster :(

Perhaps stick your seed packets in a Tupperware box in the fridge too.
