Lime to compost
« on: May 23, 2016, 23:09 »
I hope to set up my compost bins this weekend and get rid of the daleks.
I read somewhere adding lime helps the breaking down process and as I have some lime left over from the brassica bed does anybody else do this?

no.

I just keep the lime for the next time I have brassicas, parsnips and beans to plant.

Although the composting process does produce organic acids, they in turn are broken down as the pile reaches maturity - most finished compost ends up fairly neutral in pH whatever it was made from.

Adding lime is therefore not necessary, and can actually interfere with the action of some of the microorganisms doing all the valuable work for you.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
