evergreen shrubs and climbers
« on: April 16, 2014, 08:54 »
Hi,
I have a large (long) garden which looks ok in the summer but a little drab come winter, so what I'm looking for is some evergreen shrubs and climbers.
From tomorrow (Thursday 17th) Aldi have these... Clematis, Honeysuckle, Jasmine, Passiflora, Lathyrus,  Latifolius, Virginia Creeper and Solanum, which is why I'm asking the question now.
Any of them evergreen ? I will be buying a few of each anyway but would like to space them out correctly.

thanks
boing boing

Jasmine will probably be winter flowering, All the others aren't generally evergreen apart from a few specific varieties.

I have a double Kerria japonica (a.k.a. Bachelor's buttons) which is mostly evergreen but a bit spindy, though pruning it helps to create a more dense shrub and can acheive a decent height. Variegated ivy is usually evergreen but can take off and take over. My best idea for winter are the various varieties of Euonymus - green and gold, or green and white, but don't get the dwarf ones. These can exist as shrubs or, if they have some sort of support, can grow upwards. They are also un-demanding plants.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Thank you both for answers, I'll be getting a couple each of the Aldi climbers anyway, at £1.79 each I think it's worth a try.
I'm also making a list to take with me to my local garden center the weekend.

If you have a good garden centre it's worth visiting once a month to see what is in flower, looking good etc. then you can buy it to give all year interest. I am going to be buying a mahonia this year to brighten up my back border this year with its yellow flowers,it is also evergreen. I've got a shrub that will fit the bill for you but have forgotten its name. I will look when I get up.

It's a daphne, lost the label so don't know the variety, but it normally flowers in the winter & is scented. I moved it last year so it didn't flower over the winter but is just coming into flower now.

I have a fatshedera and a semi-everygreen honeysuckle (name escapes me) growing over a shed which provides a nice green patch in the winter months.

edit

My ebay history tells me it's lonicera similis var. delavayi  and I bought it in 2006  http://apps.rhs.org.uk/plantselector/plant?plantid=1194
