Any advice for a sore swollen ankle?
« on: February 04, 2018, 15:34 »
Does anyone have much experience of this, in an er older person?

Four days ago, I went over on my ankle in thick mud when getting my wife's ponies in.No big deal at the time but increasing painful with swollen ankle since yesterday. Standard advice seems to rest it and keep it elevated. I'm wondering if physiotherapy might help. Any views on this as I'm going crazy just sitting down listening to the radio or reading?

RICE
Rest
Ice
Compress?
Elevate.
Sooner you do that the better & it will mend quicker.
But  to be honestit sounds like you might be better going to A&E if the swelling didn’t come up straight away (2 days after incident)to get it checked out🙁 you probably need an X-ray. Don’t delay any longer, you don’t want complications setting in.

Oh, I don't think it merits A and E. The swelling disappears overnight and comes back if or when I start walking on it. I just wondered if physiotherapy might help

If it is a soft tissue injury, arnica cream or gel can be very good.

There are a lot of small bones in the ankle and you may have done some damage to one.  Not wishing to be rude or cheeky, but in an older person, even small breaks do need a bit more TLC.  If not A&E, a visit to your GP or even asking to see the pharmacist at the chemist might be a good idea.

MoS and Snowy aren't wrong.  I went over on mine 14 months ago, thought "she'll be right" and strapped it up.  Bit like you. It swelled up, went a bit purple and green and then looked okay. But - It still isn't.   :(  I really ought to get it X-Rayed.  :( :( :(

Thanks for all the advice. I'll book a session with a physiotherapist tomorrow. She specialises in sports injuries and I've known her through rugby for many years. It'll cost me a few quid but at least I'll be able to book at a time that suits me, be in and out in 40 minutes and not clog up the NHS system

Getting it checked out is definitely worth it.  Even if it just soft tissue damage, ligaments, muscles and all the other twangy bits can go wrong and cause a lot of long term pain unless dealt with.

Fingers crossed you are back on your feet soon  :)

Right, two days later. No treatment other than a couple of ibuprofen and determination to ignore it. Pain almost gone and swelling much less than yesterday after a good night's sleep, despite a hard hour this morning clearing snow from drive and yard. Cancelled tomorrow's physio appointment. Job's a good un :nowink:

id be very disappointed if your physio decides to do and start doing physio sessions without xrays and specialist instruction on what the damage is in your ankle, take this from someone with 20 yrs of ankle and knee injuries and double figure operations on two ankles and knee.
