I never harvest more than 1/3 at any one picking, as I believe that the plant needs to have quite a few leaves left on to generate the energy required to produce more leaves.

I pick once a week usually.

It is often suggested that you stop pulling stalks at about midsummer's day so as to allow the plant to refocus on building up its energy.  The stalks often get more stringy and acidic as the season goes on, too.

I've just looked on the main website and found more info (probably better than mine!) here:

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Thanks Yorkie, does its matter if I pick the skinny stalks or the fat juicy ones. I know which ones I want to use but what is best for the plant does anyone know?

I moved my rhubarb in December, can I take any this year? It looks okay, just a bit thin.

I take a mix of both (but prefer the fat ones  )

Personally, I wouldn't.

Did you divide it or just move it ?  if you divided it you should give it a rest this year to recover and rebuild it's stores in it's roots.

If you moved it whole with minimal disturbance you could take a crop but go easy on it,  it's still had a bit of trauma . . .

Thanks for the replies. I divided it to make 6 from 3. I'll leave it for this year, will have to trade gooseberries for rhubarb with my neighbour!
