Collecting Rain Water on my Plot?
« on: May 10, 2011, 08:20 »
Hi,

I have not so long ago (4 - 6 weeks) acquired my first allotment. We are not allowed to have a shed on the plots and the council will be providing shared concrete sheds (for a small fee) but these will not be next to my plot. What or how is the best way for me to collect rain water on my plot? I was hoping to have a water butt coming from a drain pipe off my shed that i am not allowed..

Obviously you've somehow got to find or create a large catchment area to collect rainwater; I assume greenhouses are also not permitted (or you haven't got one?)

I've seen various types of Heath Robinson constructions, usually involving corrugated sheeting and tin baths, but I suspect they might not be allowed either..................
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Hi,

No green houses are also not allowed because it is an open area and high wind can occur..

I like the tin bath idea but somehow i feel it may be frowned upon..

How do the others collect rainwater? Is water provided with the rent, if so you could fill a water butt and use that for seedlings.

It's a brand new site and water will be available from June on site and is included in rent. I did think about filling from there and raising the butt so i could get some pressure to maybe run a hose from it. I am trawling websites now looking for an IBC 1000l container.

I've seen where people spread 4 strong canes apart, then tack on a strong sheet of polythene which dips in the centre and holds rainwater during a storm. With some manipulation, you could direct the catch directly into a water butt or collection tub.
