Can anyone identify this cockerel?
« on: April 09, 2012, 17:23 »
Hi chaps. We were lucky enough to inherit this cockerel after finding him wandering down the lane in January. At the time he was pretty much red feathered all over, but now he has these lovely black feathers with a green sheen to them from his tail, and his shoulder feathers are going a darker chestnut colour.

I thought he might be a New Hampshire Red, but I've seen some images of Rhode Island Reds and now I'm unsure!

This was my Rhode island red bantam cockerel before he was sent to the great hen house in the sky, lovely little bird to look at but boy was he aggressive. How does he compare to yours?

Thanks for posting that magicaltoad :) Lovely looking chap but yours is more of a plum brown whereas mine's more of a reddy chestnut brown. Also mine's as soft as anything - not violent in the slightest, though I have read that both breeds I suspect he might be are both potentially angry birds. I wonder if anyone else has either breed so I can compare. I ask as if I can find out which he is I may buy hens of the same type, but it would depend on the breed as one is a good layer (what I'm after), the other is only good for eating (not what I want).

Looks like a RIR to me too.

See if I can find a photo of my Rooster

Not a plummy colour, but looks like he uses a lot of Brylcreem! lol

I'll try and get a better photo of him to show his real colour. He does look more 'ginger' than both your cockerels, but that might be the dodgy photo I have :)

My Brian said he looks part Rhodey, as he looks 2 tone plus the white bits underneath.  Rhodey's are uniform all through.

He does look lovely though!

Oh thanks Grannie :) He is a darling! Hmm - I will get some better pics, but I've decided I'll still go for Light Sussex and see if anyone will let me introduce their Light Sussex cockerel to them in a separate paddock for some 'howsyerfather'. That way we get to keep him as I really can't part with him now - I think we've been lucky in him finding us!
