Blossom end rot
« on: July 12, 2008, 18:12 »
It appears I have a small problem with Blossom end rot, about 4 toms so far but lots still untouched.
Anyone got suggestions about how to treat, I do regularly water at most missing one day a week.
They are in my greenhouse.
Thanks
Allotment Gardener.

Blossom end rot is actually caused by inadequate delivery of calcium, amongst other things to the fruit.

Poor watering is not actually the cause of the rot, but can be the cause of poor calcium delivery.

Here's a good link....

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Yes, thanks DD.
Our tomatoes are suffering from this but have been regularly watered. OH has been using his 'special' fertilizer made of chicken poo and nettles! Other than that mostly rain water is used.
In what way can we put the calcium back? I have looked on the tomorite bottle but it doesn't mention calcium. Any help would be gratefully received.  :)

The link recommends a foliar feed with calcium nitrate.

Here's a link to such stuff.....

(Garden lime contains calcium   )

Sorry missed this bit.

You can't treat, you can help prevent.

I've never had it in toms grown straight in the soil, interestingly enough. Nature wins again!
