age of hen to perch

How old does a hen need to be before you can let it perch, I believe if you let them perch too soon it can damage their breast bone?/?

Mine have been perching since 7 weeks old.  Breast look fine.  In the wild what would they do? Perch high up or get eaten.  I have never heard of this theory have you anything to back it up?

Thank you
No, I have been sourcing info/advice from all over the place, I have a recollection that I either read or was told that very young birds should not perch, I'm not even sure of the reason other than it is to do with the development of a bone.
But its exactly like you say, what would they do in the wild? I am new to hens and need to keep reminding myself that they are brilliantly self-caring. I have been amazed at how sharp their instincts are considering they were bred in a domestic environment.

I have only had chucks for a year. Tip if possible try not to worry!! Beware of the old wives tales.  Stick around on this forum and you will learn loads just by reading others questions.

Actually, no it is true with the very heavy breeds, eg cochins, I dont let my young heavy growers perch too early, there again I show my birds and a crooked breastbone would be classed as a serious fault. :) saying that most breeds shouldn't be a problem at all!

Ah yes, now I remember!
It was when I was researching breeds, I was told if I got Orpington not to let them perch too young. As it happens the young Welsummer seems to prefer sleeping on the floor at the moment anyway.
My family think Ive gone mad, I was warned chickens are addictive and Ive been well and truly hooked, already planning expansion! The forum is brilliant, so helpful/reassuring and I dont feel alone with my obsession!!! :D
