Triffid identification please...
« on: April 19, 2009, 12:08 »
Can anyone ID these rampant plants please ?

They have very strong root runners. They outdo the bindweed underground and grow all over the borders. I assume they've been planted at some point in the past but are taking over. I may have photos of flowers somewhere from last year but can't find them.

Thanks for any suggestions. :)

If it has tall mauve flower spikes it is Bears Breeches - Acanthus mollis

I have to admit, Rob, that you have weeds classes above the rest of us! 8)
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Excellent ID salmo, thank you  :D

I remember from a couple of years ago, we had some bear's britches but at the time I took little notice of them. I was too busy rebuilding the bungalow. ::)

We seem to have a lot of them and when I was weeding a while ago, the roots have formed a mat in one border. Need to thin a bit :)

DD - We've got weeds I haven't even discovered yet   I suspect there may be a lost tribe in there somewhere.

I agree with Salmo its Acanthus mollis a native of Italy and Southern Europe which has long been used as a garden plant and was stylised in Roman architecture
It spreads by seed and can also be grown from root cuttings so if you try and dig it out root fragments left behind will grow
Playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order!

Reminiscant of bindweed  ???

I did a bit of reading and it only flowers occasionally apparently. It flowered a couple of years back and since then it's just been the leaves. I thought the flowers had gone and this was something else  :D D'oh !

I'll have to see if I can get some of the roots out. They are very rubbery and have an inner and outer sheath that breaks easily. One day, I will tame this garden. Then i can die a happy man

Thanks for help

And a worn-out one!

I would think that Roundup will kill it, if that is what you want!

Don't want to kill it, just to tame it and contain it a bit.

There's about a dozen other things I want to destroy and send into space !

I've just spent 10 minutes ripping ground elder out with my hands in a fit of pique. I'm hoping the sudden loss of 90% of its leaves may knock it back slightly. :D

I've got a feeling they might already have some there.  :D

Just about everything I've seen there, we seem to have too. Must have been a market stall in Boston 30 years ago selling plants to everybody. ::)
