Peas three feet high but no flowers
« on: May 27, 2011, 14:06 »
We sowed pea seeds (Onward) in a trough outside at the beginning of April. The plants are now about three feet high and looking very healthy and strong, but haven't produced so much as a single flower between them. Kelvedon Wonder sowed at the same time are flowering now.

Someone suggested they might have too much nitrogen (although they're in the same soil as the KW ones) and said we should give them some tomato feed. OH has been giving them nettle tea for the past two weeks, but they're still showing no signs of flowering.

Should they be flowering yet? If so, is there anything we can do about it?

KW are first early peas, and will crop before Onward  :)

OK, thanks - but shouldn't the Onward be starting to produce flowering shoots yet?

I think they'll flower a couple/3 weeks later than KW.

Never says that on the back of the packet does it?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Last year my Wilkinson's sugarsnap pea packet went little further than indicating that it didn't actually contain mangel wurzel seeds!  ::)

In particular, it didn't mention that they can grow to about 7 feet, which is why I enclosed them in 5 feet of protective netting and finished up having to surgically remove the netting!

(Brilliant crop though!)  :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
